Vokashi Invitation, October 29th in Fort Greene

From Steve:
Dear Carrie McCracken TRUCE garden composters,
Looking forward to another  food waste deposit. I have prepared  an area
in a new planting box.  I am forwarding a communication from Vandra;
eco-entrepreneur and activist Board Member of the New York City Community
Garden Coalition. Vokashi  http://nyccgc.org/
She has invited us to be a part of an  exciting event reviewing
progress in spreading the potential benefits of Bokashi recycling.
I spoke with Vandra yesterday; and she would like to know if we
can attend and present word of our collaboration. Please share
with the participants at HCFS to see how many can attend and
share the flyer with your networks. The  sooner we get this technology inot
widespread use for environmental and agricultural benefits; the greener our
urban communities will be.
Invitation from Vandra:
As seasoned or new fermenters, I would really appreciate your attending this demonstration. While the program will include the basics of fermenting from making the bran, to watching a couple of the composting practices, I would also like to introduce other gardens using fermented food waste and the research that is going on at Brooklyn College.
Want to recycle your food scraps? and help urban composting? Have you heard about fermenting food scraps? Do you know that fermented food scraps is good for composting and worm bins?
hear the developing story
of fermenting food waste in NYC
from fermenters, scientists, gardeners,
households and small businesses, all recycling their organic food waste and providing valuable resources for community garden composting

Dirt delivered

Mike adds soil around young plants

soil shower for seedlings

GreenThumb delivered soil and compost to our garden on Monday.
Everyone should take this opportunity to enhance the soil in their planting area. Anyone with low soil volume in their boxes or areas can now build up soil depth.  Everyone who already has plants growing can apply some compost for fertilization.
We need to clear the piles, so take some soon. With all the rain this week, we will do our best to keep the piles dry and easy to move.
Our soil tests show that the improvements we made last year are significant.
Please take some soil to your box and help us distribute the new dirt.
Many thanks to GreenThumb for this help to our soil and garden.

Composting Notes

Three-bin composting tips here

Thanks to interventions from some master composters, we are  making our pile(s) successful again. Thanks Carol!

Thanks to Steve and leaf drop-offs, we have a lot of excellent composting material.  Thanks to Boel for helping to bring coffee grounds into the mix.

Compost Workshop August 8th

Try out our new compost bins and help feed our plants. Find out how even your banana peel can lend a hand. Ian will share composting tales and tips at noon, following the regular garden meeting at 11a.m.

New Compost Bin

Ian made a spectacular new compost bin for the garden!

Note how perfectly he prepared the northwest corner, giving the compost bin a solid base with level ground clear of debris. This bin will vastly increase the volume of compost the garden creates, a big boon to our poor city soil.

Thank you Ian, great work!

Ian is an experienced composter and will be sharing his stories and tips with gardeners soon.
