About

The Carrie McCracken Community Garden strives to be a green and welcoming space. To that end, we recruit volunteer members and offer public access hours and events from April through October annually.

Where

The garden is located on Saint Nicholas Avenue between West 117th and 118th Streets in Harlem, New York City – see map. The garden is on two city lots where apartment buildings once stood, and is registered with Green Thumb of NYC. In 2011, the garden registered with the Parks Department with an agreement through 2015.

When

During the growing season, you can join us in the garden on weekend afternoons. Gardeners meet the second Saturday of every month at noon, in the garden, weather permitting. See our garden calendar for all our events.

  1. Hi Steve and Ivy,

I met you the other morning as I was walking to work passing by the garden. I live around the corner and would love to volunteer. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do.

    Thanks!
    -Katherine

  2. Hi Katherine:

We are all volunteers; and there’s plenty of chores to be done. So let us know what you’re interested in and when you’d like to come by; if it’s outside the regular hours. What kind of planting would you like to do?

  3. i’m preparing potted “mini-gardens” and would like to put together a morning hour for our local kiddos–i’ll call steve with details.

    the site looks great, everyone!

  4. Hi Steve,

I wanted to receive updates about the garden and meetings and what I can do to help. For some reason despite being given a chance to vote for the logo via email a few months ago, I have not been included in the group email list for updates. Please could you include me. Thanks much.

    • I referred Ila to the Calendar page and sent corrected email address information in. Ila had one of the more successful planting boxes at the garden; and visited
      often. She is pictured in several garden archive photos. I can be reached at 212 662-9557; to address garden issues. There is a message system;
and mornings are the best time to catch me.
I just want to clarify here that all comments on the website are being responded to.

  5. Hi – I visited the garden this past weekend and would love to be a part of it! How do I join?

    Thanks.

    Your neighbor,
    Amy
